P0125: Responsorial Psalms and Tenebrae Reponsories. Set to music by Adrian Davis
The Very Reverend Mark Bonney, Dean of Ely
It is a great delight to commend this collection of responsorial psalms which I hope will be widely available and widely used. I well remember, several years ago now, asking Adrian Davis to compose some responsorial psalms because I thought that much of what was available on the market was, musically, pretty ordinary. It's very exciting to see an idea one threw out bear such glorious fruit.
Adrian writes accessibly, with touches of humour and artfulness, always with harmonic and melodic interest and above all an understanding of the liturgical context.
Parish church choirs perform a marvellous service in sustaining and supporting the worship of the people of God. It is wonderful that first rate musicians like Adrian give of their time and energies creating new work to enable their choirs to enhance the liturgy.
We should all be very grateful for this contribution to a part of the liturgy where clergy can be all too easily tempted just to sing another hymn, rather than find a satisfactory way of using the psalter.
This collection fulfils a very important role.
